Description
Satire on the popular stage. Apollo, holding a volume of Horace, is kicked from a stage by Punch; Harlequin, wearing a black mask, pursues him brandishing his slap-stick and waving a scroll lettered "Harlequin Horace"; beneath their feet lie volumes of Rowe, Shakespeare and Johnson; to the left, Pierrot watches. On either side of the stage are statues of theatrical muses; above hangs the motto "Vivitur ingenio" flanked by festoon; above the stage entrances on either side are boxes from which members of the audience look down. Sign is from Drury Lane theatre by Wren.
