Abstract

Sanal relays 5 well wishes that are uttered in different life situations. (1) A well wish said to a newborn child: ‘Let the newborn have its umbilical cord healed quickly and have strong legs/ Let the newborn glorify his/her parents/ Let him/her grow healthy so that his/her legs stand firmly on the ground/ Let the heavens bless the newborn!’ (2) A well wish said to a boy who is called to serve in the army: ‘Let the boy who is going to the army learn military skills well/ Let him have a nice (and smooth) time there like cheese in butter/ Let him return safe and healthy/ Let the heavens bless him!’ (3) A well wish said by someone to his/her daughter at her wedding: ‘Let our daughter be a good bride in her new house/ So that she loves the young and respects the elders/ Let the luck of your new house touch upon you/ Let the heavens bless you!’ (4) A well wish uttered to one’s daughter-in-law: ‘Our daughter-in-law/ Live a long and happy life/ Let the luck of our house be bestowed upon you/ Learn the traditions of your new home be a good daughter-in-law/ Let it be like this!’ (5) A well wish said to each other by the parents of the newlywed: ‘We hope you have a long and happy life/ Let us become close relatives/ So that our links became unbreakable and unbendable’.
