Abstract

In this video, Tukan recounts the recent pastoral history of Salhit pasture since its establishment. Born in 1952 within Salhit pasture, Tukan has spent his entire life among the Torghuts and is fluent in both Kazakh and Mongolian. From a young age, he learned from the elders that at least four family lineages reside in Salhit pasture: Bayan, Ümhei, Tekh, and Mörch. Interestingly, descendants of the Mörch family are prohibited from using words related to ‘Mör’ and must substitute them with other terms. Before the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949, two wealthy Torghuts, Gendei and Shondai, were well-known residents of Salhit pasture. Another prosperous individual, Eelei, was arrested in 1958 on the pretext of opposing the communal policy, and Tabilhat pasture was established using his confiscated livestock. Additionally, Salhit pasture was initially developed by two affluent Uyghurs who introduced sheep and horses, owned by Amithan and Abtikar, respectively.
