Abstract

The interest of Thomas Coke (1697-1759) in the text of Livy is established, but new research in his library at Holkham Hall and in the archives in Florence reveals that he intended to produce an edition illustrated with visual material drawn from the most up to date antiquarian texts of the day. Drawing on letters, accounts, and annotated texts, this article sheds new light on the relationship between English Grand tourists and Italian scholars in the early eighteenth century, and on the modes of book patronage and production in the period.
