Abstract

Science-based analyses of archaeological materials are an intrinsic component of modern research. This entry identifies some remaining challenges, and outlines future directions. Some key issues include: integration with other branches of archaeological science, the relationship between archaeological science and heritage science, problem-oriented training and education, the impact of portable and less invasive instruments, and the balance between method development and the application of established techniques. Researchers are encouraged to be more conscious of the ethics and modern relevance of their work, embrace the standards of open science, and help redress the imbalance resulting from colonial legacy.
