Abstract

This paper presents the first ever analysis of the logbooks of the aliens in the Channel Island of Guernsey in the 1930s; logbooks termed here as ‘objects of collaboration’ because of the role they played in the persecution and deportation of the island’s Jews. Such actions would have been seriously hampered had these records been destroyed or hidden before the arrival of German occupying forces, or if they had not been used to supply the Germans, on demand, with the data that they regularly requested to carry out their persecutions. When placed in context, they highlight both the complicity of the local authorities and provide another example of how Britain failed Jewish refugees.
