Abstract

This video featured a Torghut marriage ritual in Hobogsair in 2020. Due to the Covid-19 lockdown in China, the young couple, Gonchig and Garma, had to delay their planned marriage ritual until the following year. Fortunately, a year later, they successfully organised a traditional Torghut marriage ritual, and this video documented the entire event. The ritual started in the early morning and ended at the end of the day. Within the ritual, one stage worth mentioning is when an elder, standing in front of relatives from both sides, asks three questions loudly: ‘Shar narand murguvu? shagai chumgund murguvu? aaw eejin zayan sahiusand murguvu? (Did they pay respect to the sun, the ankle bone, and their parents?)’. In response, everyone cheerfully chimes in, ‘Yes, yes, yes!’ In this case, the sheep’s ankle bone also plays a religious role, as it is offered to the Buddhas at a respected place in the house after the marriage ceremony.
