Description
Frontispiece from W. H. Ryff, Architectur, Nuremberg: Petreius, 1547. An allegory of mathematics being weighed down by a purse representing the hindrance of ingenium by poverty or worldly concerns. The putto is adapted from Alciato's emblem Pauertatem summis ingeniis obesse ne provehantur (Poverty hinders the greatest talents from advancing). The objects represent the mathematical and mechanical arts. The plate is accompanied by two inscriptions: "Vivitur ingenio, caetera mortis erunt" (we live by the spirit, the rest belongs to death), and below: "Aurum probatur igni ingenium vero Mathematicis" (Just as gold is proved by fire, so true intelligence is shown by mathematics).
