Description
A young woman (Pictura) sits in front of an unfinished painting on an easel. Pallas Athena (Minerva), the Greek goddess of Art, here represents artistic Ingenium and stands behind Pictura, giving instructions. At their feet lie all kinds of attributes including a chisel, a mallet, a measuring rod and a pair of compasses. Adam van Noort, dean of the Antwerp Guild of St Luke (1597-1602), taught both his son-in-law, Jacob Jordaens, and Rubens.
