Abstract

The Zasagin Khüre monastery, situated in the Jasag Banner of Hobogsair, has played a significant role among the Torghuts in the region since its inception. Although the original monastery was destroyed and repurposed as a warehouse during the Cultural Revolution (1966-1976), it was reconstructed again in the 1980s, with the most recent refurbishment completed in 2017. In the face of China’s recent political tensions, which have affected many minority regions in Xinjiang, the Jasagin Khüre monastery has managed to survive to some extent due to its rural location. However, the installation of 24-hour surveillance cameras both within and around the monastery has led to a reluctance among many individuals to attend activities in the monastery, particularly the younger generation. According to the head lama of the monastery, only a few lamas recognized by the government hold positions within the monastery. Additionally, there is a solitary member of the younger generation who recently joined the monastery after completing secondary school education, in compliance with government requirements.
