A view of the ceremony in front of the mission house on Stacey Island, showing natives sitting on canoes watching the proclamation in the foreground, with the officer party at the left of the picture, and mission teachers, and their wives (in European clothes) in the centre. The white ensign has been hoisted, and the Union Jack is being raised. The view is across the bay to the mainland, and four ships of the squadron can be seen at anchor (H.M.S. 'Nelson', 'Espiegle', 'Raven' and 'Swinger'), with smoke issuing from H.M.S. 'Nelson's' guns. Farm Peak (1806 feet) in right background.
