Drawing. The shadows, especially of the figures and cart on the left, suggest that the sun is shining from in front and to the left of the viewer; but the surfaces on the right of the picture are brighter than that angle would allow, suggesting that the picture was possibly composed at two different times of day. There are indications of cumulus clouds in the lower reaches of the sky. The centre foreground--midground is occupied by uneven somewhat rocky ground with small shrubs. To the left there is an indistinctly indicated flat-roofed building, with what may be a doorway facing the viewer at the left-hand edge of the picture, and what may be a llama at the right-hand near corner of the building. To the right of this, we have a sightline to two sailing boats (at anchor? -- the Beagle and Adventure?), indistinctly shown end-on in half-profile, in front of a far shore, where a low hill to the left slopes down to distant lowland in the centre. On the near shore, two figures are standing or walking to the right of the building, to the left of a large cart with wheels some 2m in diameter, laden with what may be a large bale of hay, or a barrel. To the right of this group there are three more distant figures and an unidentified object in the centre at the water's edge. A fourth figure stands directly to their right, to the left of and behind a large rush-like clump at least 3m tall and 5m wide. This large plant is growing slightly to the left and in front of a brick-built thatched barn in the right centre, seen in half-profile with other low vegetation surrounding it, and a couple of weeds apparently growing in the thatch. On the right and slightly more distant stands a single-storey house, also in half-profile, with a door facing to the right which a human figure is entering. To the right we can see a dog with raised tail side-on facing right beneath a small window. The roof of this house is centrally flat and slopes slightly at the sides; the house is partly surrounded by low vegetation.
