Abstract

This report examines bistable bending and twisting hinges with applications in deployable aerospace structures. The effect of prestress on the position and number of stable states is determined through parametric studies, using 3D-printed prototypes, finite element methods, and analytical models. It is established that prestress may be used in conjunction with a bistable hinge’s geometry to adjust the range of displacement or rotation between stable states; however, excessive prestress may cause the system to lose bistability, thereby limiting its efficacy in tailoring the hinges’ behavior.
