Abstract
This working paper reviews the evidence for layout of the legionary fortress so as to create a new plan. Any plan is liable to be a palimpsest of walls plotted with different precision and possibly belonging to different phases. Nonetheless, the exercise is important in giving an up-to-date overall vision of the state of knowledge incorporating all the accessible antiquarian observations, excavations and ‘grey literature’. This plan builds on the fundamental work of Patrick Ottaway over several decades. A handlist provides references and links to information about all the interventions mentioned to make data easily accessible. The interpretation for each area is examined. Finally, a series of plans of the fortress are provided which are free for reuse under a CC-BY licence. The digitisation within a GIS system and a supporting database are also available for re-use, which is encouraged.
