Abstract
Seabirds in a coastal setting.
Description
Watercolour. In the foreground a brownish coloration indicates mudflats or sandflats, behind which in the left centre a seabird or wader stands in a small dark grey-green rockpool with small black and brown rocks to either side. In the centre above and to the right of this standing bird, another of the same type flies towards the viewer. The birds are white with some black back and distal wing feathers, pale beaks, and dark legs. In the right midground a more distant group of 8 such birds stand on a sand or mud bank, behind which blue calm water stretches to the horizon in the right of the picture. Behind the expanse of water, from the right centre to the left of the picture, and casting a darker blue shadow over the water, low land rises, forming in the left centre a single hill (possibly another view of the hill with the fort on top), here coloured pale bluish-purple. The sky is blank; the brightness of the breasts of the more distant group of birds suggests that the sun is shining from the right, perpendicular to the line of sight. The annotation at the top reads: "It is only deep water that reflects a dark shadow".
