Abstract
This insights paper examines patterns in the scaling of UK university spinouts and considers how universities can play a role in retaining innovation value domestically. It draws on data from 884 spinouts founded between 2002 and 2021 from 15 universities, analysing trends in IPOs, acquisitions, and investment patterns. The paper also situates university spinout challenges within the broader context of global technology competition and shifting geopolitical dynamics, highlighting the strategic importance of domestic capability building. The research is complemented by insights from senior knowledge exchange professionals shared at the May 2024 Knowledge Exchange UK Director's Forum.
