Abstract
The UK exhibits amongst the highest interregional productivity inequalities in the industrialised world. A consensus has emerged in recent years across consecutive governments that improving national economic growth depends on increasing the economic performance of cities and towns outside London and the Southeast. To assist policymakers in this area, this report discusses the theories and practical approaches to regionally focused R&I policy, drawing both on established good practices and emerging thinking in policy design and implementation in the US and EU, and the current UK government’s mission-led approach.
