Description

205 x 152 mm. A view showing the church exterior, with four people standing in front. 'They are noble pieces of bamboo-work, capable of holding three or four hundred people, with a high, pitched roof not less than thirty feet in height... Let my reader imagine himself such a building made of beautifully interlaced bamboo strips and crowned with a massive palm-leaf thatch, with doors cut high, compelling a step of two or three feet, in order that the pigs may not come to church - with no windows, because it is better to get light through the chinks of the wall than heat through windows...' (Montgomery, H.H (1896), 'The light of Melanesia'. London: SPCK, p.214). This photograph is used as an illustration in Montgomery's 'The light of Melanesia'. Possible photographers include: Montgomery, Henry Hutchinson, 1847-1932, Bishop of Tasmania; Brittain, Arthur, fl 1892, clergyman; Welchman, Henry, fl 1890-1899, clergyman.
