Abstract

Tsagan says that her native village of Shin-Mer has 120 families. Before national holidays, people clean their courtyards, prepare their festive costumes, and make biscuits. On the day of a celebration itself, people make tea in the morning, light candles and read prayers. Old people visit younger villagers and give children candies. During Tsagan Sar, which is celebrated at the beginning of spring, it is also customary to exchange biscuits with each other. Maternal relatives are supposed to be given a special kind of biscuit called ‘kelkyatya bortsg’ as well as a cooked sheep’s leg (symbolizing women’s joining their husbands’ clan). At the end of the interview, Tsagan utters a well-wish dedicated to the holiday of Tsagan Sar.
