Abstract

Nadvid talks about the ritual of calling the rain: All participants in the ritual should appeal to the deities by reading prayers. Most importantly, they should have a sincere faith in all these. If people do not believe, it will not rain. This year, a Russian director came from St. Petersburg to make a film called ‘The heavenly camel’. We all went to Bogdo mountain. There he asked me if it was true that we had a ritual to call the rain. When I replied ‘yes’, he asked me whether I knew a person who could conduct such a ritual. I agreed to do this ritual myself. I told all the people who were there, Kalmyks, Russians and Kazakhs, to pray to their own gods and walk around a fire. I myself read prayers to Khurmust Tengri, 33 tengris, the spiritual master of the mountain, and Tsagan Aav. After the ceremony, it began to rain very hard. During all rituals Kalmyks always lit a fire and three candles. But prayers should be specific depending on the purpose of the ritual. My nephews and relatives know well about this ritual of calling the rain. Since their childhood all of them have seen how it is done. The majority of people, however, are skeptical and do not believe in this ritual.
