Description
Emblem from Barthélemy Aneau’s Picta poesis, Lyons, Macé Bonhomme, 1552. The image printed is from a reused woodblock owned by the publisher, Bonhomme. The text below the image reads: 'INTEGER, & bellus puer hic est natus, utrinque Ex patre Centauro, matreque subtus Equa. BARBARICIS istud plerunque parentibus ortos Ingenuo pueros indicat ingenio' (A decent and fine lad is born from such a beastly marriage: his father a Centaur, his mother a mare below. This, then, symbolizes that children of a fine and liberal talent are born most often from barbaric parents). This emblem plays with two different, albeit related notions: ingenuus (noble, free), and ingenium (genius).
