Abstract

Viktor talks about his son’s engagement and wedding in Moscow. Before the engagement, Viktor paid a visit to his future daughter-in-law’s family twice. During the first visit he got acquainted with the girl’s parents. The second visit involved a delegation, consisting of 11 people, who went to see the girl’s parents to discuss the wedding. The wedding began with a ‘long song’ after which the young couple entered the wedding venue. All guests offered well-wishes for the couple. The bride had her hair divided into two braids. She kept the comb with which her hair was divided ‘to use at the wedding of her own daughter in the future’. The bride’s relatives presented white trousers to the groom’s mother (which is a Derbet custom) and a tobacco pipe to the head of the groom’s delegation. After presents, the bride made Kalmyk tea and received her knew name from her in-laws. Usually, the bride’s parents pay a visit to their newlywed daughter in a week’s time. Since the wedding took place in Moscow, the bride’s parents came to see her the day after the wedding.
