Abstract
Barnai learned saddle craftsmanship from Jaltsarai about thirty years ago, but he has not devoted himself to the saddle business until today when he concentrates on it as his principal sourc of income. In the video, he explains that making a wooden frame for saddle will take one week; it is the most technical work that involves designing, cutting and affixing. It takes another week to make the leather plate (agt tatah; or literally pulling horse) for the saddle with pieces of cattle skin. For other parts of ornamentation, he mostly imports processed leather from Ili city. He can make 20 saddles and repair about 40 saddles a year. He says that except for festivals when they use traditional Mongolian saddles, in everyday life English or Western style saddles are more popular among herders who usually find a lighter and smaller design more comfortable to ride on the mountains. Realistically, a bare wooden saddle costs about ¥1,700 whilst a fully equipped saddle can cost up to ¥4,000.
