Description

This dataset accompanies the paper "Improving semi-analytical predictions of long-term basement heave in over-consolidated clay". There are 8 zip and 7z archive files, which contain experimental and computational results from the basement heave research project.

The archive files prefixed "Centrifuge*" contain experimental (geotechnical centrifuge modelling) data. Each zip archive contains data from one experiment, organised into one or more folders of quantitative experimental data and the Matlab .m scripts required to process them; the data are stored in comma separated value (CSV) files, with some data duplicated in XLSX spreadsheets and Matlab .mat databases for convenience. These are complemented by up to XLS / XLSX workbooks that tabulate and calculate salient data and observations taken manually during experiment preparation and operation.

The four 7z archive files, each prefixed "Plaxis*" contain computational (finite element modelling) data generated using Plaxis 2D 2017-01. Among these, "Plaxis HSS constitutive parameter calibration.7z" is a series of simulations of the same consolidated undrained triaxial compression tests and oedometer swelling tests using different candidate HSS (small-strain hardening) soil constitutive model parameter sets, with the aim of calibrating the HSS model. "Plaxis DYC-04 (flexi) sensitivity analysis runs.7z" and "Plaxis DYC-05 (stiff) sensitivity analysis runs.7z" contain data from 62 simulations that attempted to match two centrifuge tests, with the aim of calibrating the model parameters in soil-structure interaction simulations. Computational simulations matching the equivalent prototypes of each centrifuge test and several additional prototype various were performed using the optimised parameters and used in the "relative stiffness method" graph in the paper; the data are provided in "Plaxis reported results DYC-04 DYC-05 and variations.7z". XLSX spreadsheets of salient results from each simulation are included in the respective 7z archive.

The zip archive file "Basement heave centrifuge and Plaxis comparisons.zip" includes XLSX spreadsheets and Matlab scripts compare between the stiff basement prototype and the flexible basement prototype, focusing on six aspects: displacement, bending curvature, slab-soil contact pressure, excess pore pressure, prop force, and joint stiffness. The juxtaposition of centrifuge and Plaxis results were also used in the paper to validate the numerical modelling process using the experimental data.

An additional zip archive file, "Basement heave Plaxis results spreadsheets.zip", duplicates all XLSX spreadsheets reporting the results of the Plaxis simulations. This zip is included for the benefit of data reusers who do not have access to Plaxis or otherwise do not intend to access the raw Plaxis simulation results. The data in this zip is sufficient to reproduce all the comparisons between computational simulation and centrifuge experiment results reported in the paper.

This dataset is a curated excerpt of the "Long-term basement heave in over-consolidated clay" dataset, which was published as an accompaniment to Deryck Chan's doctoral thesis, also available in Cambridge University Open Access Repository.

Software / Usage instructions

Each compressed archive file (zip or 7z) in this dataset contains its own readme file with further instructions. Data reusers who do not have access to Plaxis should not download any of the 7z archives. Instead, "Basement heave curated Plaxis results spreadsheets.zip" contains XLSX spreadsheets that provide all the computational simulation output data necessary to reproduce all the comparisons between computational simulation and centrifuge experiment results reported in the PhD thesis. To use the Plaxis data, extract the contents of the a 7z archive into a folder using Plaxis 2D 2017-01, 7zip, or another archive manager. To access a model, open the .p2dx file using Plaxis 2D 2017-01 Output or Plaxis 2D 2017-01 Output Viewer. The relevant p2dxdat folder must be present in the same file path. To use the centrifuge data, extract the contents of a zip archive in its entirety. Open the extracted files using Matlab (or equivalent) or Microsoft Excel (or equivalent) as appropriate. The readme file inside each zip provides further instructions on the functionality of each script and workbook. Software packages involved in the preparation of this dataset include DasyLab 9, Tekscan I-Scan 7.60, Matlab R2017b, Plaxis 2D 2017-01, and Microsoft Excel 2016.
