The processed data was obtained by analising captured oscilloscope traces using offline digital signal processing (DSP) in Matlab. The DSP contains carrier frequency recovery, an adaptive equalizer based on least-mean squares, and a maximum likelihood sequence estimator. The sensitivity is taken at BER = 10^-2. Power budget is a combination of sensitivity and launch power, taken at the SOA output. The SOA characteristics were measured using a commercial optical power meter."
