Research data supporting “The Effect of Carbon and Silicon Variation on the Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of a Cobalt-Based Superalloy”

Change log

Description

This dataset supports the publication “The Effect of Carbon and Silicon Variation on the Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of a Cobalt-Based Superalloy” in Metallurgical and Materials Transactions A. It comprises data for the four cobalt-based alloys investigated in the study, which vary in carbon and silicon content, and corresponding to figures presented in the manuscript.

For ease of identification, filenames reflect their compositions and correspond to the alloy designations used in the publication as follows: • Co-101a (0.5 wt% C, 1 wt% Si) → C50Si1 • Co-101b (0.5 wt% C, 4 wt% Si) → C50Si4 • Co-101c (0.25 wt% C, 1 wt% Si) → C25Si1 • Co-101d (0.25 wt% C, 4 wt% Si) → C25Si4

The dataset includes scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) micrographs, elemental concentration maps acquired via energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) maps, X-ray diffraction (XRD) data, mechanical testing results, digital image correlation (DIC) images, and thermal analysis data.

Software / Usage instructions

The files associated with each figure have been uploaded as .zip archives. These compressed files can be extracted on most operating systems without the need for additional software. SEM Micrographs Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) micrographs are provided in .png and .tiff formats. Scale bars are included in the .png images where not already present in the .tiff versions. These files can be opened using any image viewing software. TEM Micrographs Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) micrographs are provided in .bmp, .png, or .tiff formats, and are likewise compatible with standard image viewers. SEM-EDX Data SEM-based energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) data are provided as .oipx files (Oxford Instruments format), along with associated .dat files. The .dat files are supporting data required for the .oipx project files to be opened and interpreted correctly in the Oxford Instruments AZtec software, and are not intended for independent use. These files require the proprietary Oxford Instruments AZtec software for viewing. At present, the author is not aware of any open-source software capable of reading .oipx files. STEM-EDX Data Scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) EDX data are included as .bcf files, which can be opened using the open-source HyperSpy software. Each STEM-EDX dataset is accompanied by a .pdf file detailing the data processing steps and the elemental concentration maps generated directly from the TEM. EBSD Data Electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) data are provided in .ctf format. These can be viewed using Oxford Instruments’ proprietary AZtecCrystal software. As an open-source alternative, the MTEX toolbox for MATLAB can also be used to process and visualise these files. XRD, Mechanical Testing, and DSC Data X-ray diffraction (XRD), mechanical testing, and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) data are provided in .xy, .txt, or .csv formats. For the mechanical testing results, each dataset includes a Readme_FigXdata.txt file containing a brief description of the test and the corresponding gauge cross-sectional area required for stress calculations. These files can be opened using any standard text editor or data analysis software, whether proprietary or open-source. DIC Data Images used for digital image correlation (DIC) are provided as either secondary electron (SE) or optical micrographs, depending on the in situ test. Each dataset is supplied in .png or .tiff format. These files are compatible with standard image viewing software. Thermo-Calc Calculations Results from equilibrium calculations performed using Thermo-Calc software are provided in .txt and .png formats. The .txt files can be opened with any standard text editor or data analysis software, while the .png images can be viewed using any standard image viewing application.
