Abstract

Spanish costume designer Maike Marín (1938-2025) leaves behind her a wide array of work on some of the most admired films of Spanish cinema of the 1970s-90s, but unfortunately no interviews or memoirs. This article takes her first film as costume designer, Mi querida señorita/My Dearest Señorita (Armiñán 1972), as a case study, adopting a feminist methodology of ‘speculation’ (Field 2022) to test the hypothesis of her creative contribution to, and possible leadership in, a work in which clothing and accessories are particularly important, conveying both individual change (a trans character), and societal transformation (the Transition to democracy).
